SUMMARY:Avoiding Damage\, Distress and Disappointment in Concrete Structures Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Avoiding Damage\, Distress\, and Disappointment in Concrete Structures\nDate: February 18\, 2021 \nTime: 8:00 – 9:00 am CST\nPresenter: Michael Lee\, (Principal – Wiss\, Janney\, Elstner Associates\, Inc.)\nCredits: 1 PDH and/or 1 AIA CES LU/HSW (AIA Course #MCC021821)\nCost: Free\nRegistration Link: https://cvent.me/2PVbQ5 \nDescription: This presentation reviews failures\, damages\, and other incidences of poor performance in concrete structures that have served to shape today’s building codes and the standard of care for the profession. Examples range from well-documented\, high-profile collapses to lesser known but similarly influential structural and serviceability problems.  Case histories will include discussion of excessive cracking\, the cause of such distress\, and mitigation measures. The case histories will illustrate how small details can often mean the difference between success and disappointment; and how codes have evolved to reduce the risk of future failures. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nAttendees will understand how failures\, damages\, and other incidences of poor performance in concrete structures have served to shape today’s building codes and the standard of care for the profession.\nAttendees will be able to identify examples of well-documented\, high-profile collapses and lesser known but similarly influential structural and serviceability problems.\nAttendees will understand some causes of excessive cracking in concrete.\nAttendees will comprehend how to mitigate excessive cracking in concrete.

SUMMARY:Building More than Just the Pedestal: An Owner/Developer's Perspective on Building All Concrete Multifamily Mid-Rise Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Date: February 3\, 2021\nTime: Noon – 1:00 pm CST\nCost: Free\nPresenter: Ryan Bedford (President\, Bedford Development)\nCredits: 1 PDH and/or 1 AIA CES LU (AIA Course #MCC020321)\nRegistration Link \nDescription: Look around and you’ll see many five to seven story projects being built today with a one- or two-story concrete pedestal\, supporting up to five floors of steel or wood frame. These “pedestal” projects are assumed to be the cheapest way to build while longer term ownership implications of these designs are not well understood. This one-hour presentation dispels the myths that are driving the popularity of pedestal construction and demonstrates the value concrete provides.  The developer/owner’s perspective on building multi-family housing projects with Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs) will be presented\, and will include design\, construction\, and energy-efficiency implications\, as well as tenant satisfaction. The presenter will overview his use of ICF’s and concrete for the exterior wall system at Kendal Lofts\, a 42-unit project in Waukesha\, Wisconsin. In addition\, the presenter will also discuss his latest all-concrete residential projects in Wisconsin and Florida. \n

SUMMARY:Resiliency - Consideration Beyond Code Requirements
DESCRIPTION:Resiliency – Consideration Beyond Code Requirements\nDate: January 27\, 2021\nTime: Noon – 1:00 pm CST\nCost: Free\nPresenter: Shamim Rashid-Sumar\, PE\, FSFPE (Vice President\, Fire Codes and Standards at the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association)\nCredits: 1 PDH and/or 1 AIA CES LU/HSW (AIA Course #MCC012721)\nRegistration Link \nDescription: Prescriptive building code requirements represent provisions for the least safe structure that may legally be built in a jurisdiction. Over the past 20 years\, the building design and construction industry have witnessed an increase in the number of trade-offs of passive fire safety features for active systems. As natural disasters attributed to climate change continue to escalate\, the population of neighborhoods located along with the wildland-urban interface increases\, and fire and emergency access to buildings in densely populated areas is obstructed\, multiple drivers arise to consider more robust construction for our built environment. The presentation will provide an overview of increased risks from natural and human hazards\, identify approaches to mitigate their effects through voluntary and mandatory strategies and demonstrate the importance of incorporating standards for resiliency beyond minimum code requirements. \n

SUMMARY:ACI Grade 1 Certification
DESCRIPTION:The training course offers instruction in the Fundamentals of concrete testing procedures.  Emphasis is placed upon practical information and skills which will help quality-control and testing personnel do their jobs more efficiently to ensure consistent\, quality concrete and reliable test results. \nASTM C94 requires anyone testing concrete in the field to be certified through  ACI. Testing includes a classroom session followed by a field test session in the afternoon. \nThe cost for WRMCA Members is $405.  Classes are limited to 30 people.  If you carry a current ACI\, Concrete Field Testing Technician –Grade 1\ncertification\, please be an examiner for the 2022 classes.   To sign up and help\, please contact Kim at knovak@wirmca.com. \nDownload registration form here. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Better Design Through Embodied Carbon Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Date: January 13\, 2021\nTime: Noon – 1:00 pm CST\nCost: Free\nPresenter: Emily Lorenz\, PE\nCredits: 1 PDH and/or 1 AIA CES LU/HSW (AIA Course #MCC011321)\nRegistration Link \nDescription: Now that architects have a good understanding of environmental impacts related to energy use\, the next design frontier in tackling climate change is reducing the embodied carbon in buildings. This live webinar will focus on best practices for determining the embodied carbon in a building\, including credible sources for embodied carbon data. It will introduce common practices and misconceptions about comparisons of embodied carbon. A case study will be presented that highlights how design decisions may be influenced when comparing among up-front carbon\, use-phase carbon\, or whole-life carbon. The presentation will highlight existing tools related to quantifying embodied carbon. \n
