SUMMARY:WRMCA Co-Sponsored Webinar: SICK North America Campus and the Future of Concrete Construction
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time: Wednesday\, February 19\, 2025\, Noon \nCost: FREE \nCredits: 1 PDH or 1 AIA CES LU/HSW \nPresenters: Hailey Arterburn (Thornton Tomasetti); Josh Edwards (AVR Inc.); Matt Smith (Meyer Borgman Johnson); and Nate Weingart (Ancoats). Register: https://cvent.me/82NqMA \nDescription: Utilizing the SICK North America Campus project as an example\, this presentation will include practical suggestions on how to use EPD’s on a project. Presenters will provide information about where the embodied carbon can come from on a large commercial construction project and how to lower that carbon footprint. Presenters will share their insights on having project level conversations about embodied carbon and global warming potential that will lead to a successful project. Presenters will also provide specification requirements for performance mix designs and EPD’s. \nSICK is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of sensors\, safety systems\, machine vision\, encoders and automatic identification products for industrial applications. The construction of this new campus is a multi-year\, multi-phase project. \nAligning with SICK’s mission to focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly practices\, SICK’s new campus also incorporates several green initiatives. These include solar infrastructure\, electrical vehicle charging stations\, high efficiency mechanical systems\, and a below-grade rainwater filtration system. \nThe concrete was specified to have a very low environmental impact. Since the time measurements of embodied carbon have been tracked\, the SICK Office and Resource Center will utilize some of the lowest embodied carbon concrete mixes of any building project in the State of Minnesota.

SUMMARY:WRMCA Sponsored Webinar - Curing is Good
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Amy Dowell\, P.E.\, American Concrete Institute (ACI)\nRegistration: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/4782799059628867157 \nDescription: Concrete curing is the process by which hydraulic cementitious concrete matures and develops hardened properties over time. It is a result of the continued hydration of the cementitious materials and requires the presence of sufficient water and heat. This presentation will give a short overview of concrete curing. It will mainly focus on external curing of flatwork concrete; however\, internal curing will also be briefly discussed. Different curing methods will be reviewed and their effect on desired concrete properties will be presented.

SUMMARY:WRMCA Sponsored Webinar: Build for Tomorrow: Concrete for Climate Adaptation
DESCRIPTION:Register:  https://cvent.me/drQXqo \nPresenter: Jim Schneider (PCI Mountain States) \nDescription: As the climate continues to change\, buildings and infrastructure must evolve to withstand more extreme weather events and environmental stresses. This presentation explores how concrete can be deployed to enhance community resilience against flooding\, extreme temperatures\, and severe storms. We’ll examine case studies of projects that utilize concrete’s unique properties to protect coastal areas\, manage stormwater\, and moderate urban heat island effects. The session will also cover emerging innovations in concrete mix designs and construction techniques that maximize durability while minimizing environmental impact.

SUMMARY:WRMCA Sponsored Webinar - Architectural Concrete: Planning for Perfection
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Murphy Curran\, P.E. (MBJ)\, Josh Edwards\, P.E. (AVR\, Inc.)\, and Mike Martin\, P.E. (McGough) \nClick here to register.  \nDescription: Architectural concrete\, with its versatility and aesthetic appeal\, is revolutionizing the way we approach modern building construction. This presentation explores the entire lifecycle of planning and executing architectural concrete projects\, from initial concept through to completion. During the project conceptualization phase\, identifying project goals and objectives is crucial. Collaboration with architects\, designers\, and engineers is essential to develop innovative design concepts and select the appropriate type and style of architectural concrete for the project. The planning and design phase involves establishing a comprehensive project plan\, including timelines\, budgets\, and resource allocation. \nWe will explore a variety of techniques\, including textured finishes\, decorative aggregates\, and integral coloring\, which allow for unique and customizable concrete surfaces. Additionally\, the presentation will highlight a few case studies of exemplary projects that demonstrate the successful integration of architectural concrete.

SUMMARY:WRMCA Sponsored Webinar: Understanding and Overcoming Barriers to Implementation of Low Carbon Concrete Policies
DESCRIPTION:Register: https://cvent.me/YRX9Wq \nPresenter: Matthew P. Adams\, Ph.D.\, FACI (New Jersey Institute of Technology) \nDescription: A wide range of policies have been developed and implemented recently to encourage the implementation of low-carbon and sustainable concrete\, including the recent publication of ACI Code 323: Low-Carbon Concrete. While many people believe that technology has been the only barrier to implementation of these policies\, often it is a complex web of barriers that can stall out or prevent implementation of sustainable construction. This presentation will discuss these barriers and present potential solutions for overcoming the barriers. Examples of successful policy will be shown along with potential future avenues for buy clean implementation.
